Feeling daring? Order a grappa to aid in the digestion of your dinner. Grappa is a brandy-based digestivo made by distilling the leftovers from the grapes that have been pressed into wine. Each grappa takes on a distinct flavor depending on the grapes used in its production. Flavors, such as cherry, honey, raspberry, etc., are also sometimes infused into the grappa as well.
Most grappa are clear in color, though some older grappa are aged in wooden barrels and absorb color as well as flavor from the wood in which they are stored. Grappa is delicious alone or mixed into a shot of espresso.
In the same vein, Amaros are traditional Italian digestifs. While grappa is produced with grapes, amaros are made with herbs and roots. Te result; a thick, syrupy liquor with very pronounced earthy, vegetal notes. Amaro can be enjoyed both on the rocks and alone. Just don't mix it with red bull, this is not Jaegermiester!
